    Hi Kevin, extremely well made video! I have one question: around 9:25 you mention you are ignoring Grid North for now, but when we use map and compass don't we usually work relative to the gridlines on the map so that the grid magnetic angle (or magnetic declination from grid lines) is more important to adjust to if you want to go anywhere on the map except true North? Correct me if I'm wrong. Just curious how you see this!

    • @KevinOutdoors
      @KevinOutdoors 2 дня назад

      You are absolutely right. Many people find magnetic declination challenging to understand, so in this video, I focused just on that. I have another video on Grid North. It is nice to use the grid lines, but they don't usually point to true north, so you do need to adjust for both. Or, you can just use the edge of the map as that will point to true north, but it is less practical.

    Heck yea, I second the comments on the windscreen! Manufacturers test their equipment in a lab, not out in the field. I would love to see a video that compares boil times for differing stove systems in calm, breezy, windy, and blustery conditions. I have an old camping stove that will boil water in under two minutes in no breeze, but as soon as you introduce breeze you can plan on (I've estimated) an extra minute per mile-per-hour per boil. The long and short of it is, that if I start out with a cannister that should last all week, with any sort of wind over a mild breeze, I can plan on running out of fuel before the weekend is out. The windscreens should be built into the design.

    • @KevinOutdoors
      @KevinOutdoors 4 дня назад

      Some stoves do. This one is partially protected but I think they should have something that clips on and protects 1/3 or 1/2 of the burner.

    I have wanted to invest in the Primus Stove Kevin because it can be used in all 4 seasons and seems to be a real workhorse. You said when using the standard canister stove you can get 1 week out of a canister. How long can you get out of one of those pump bottles with Coleman fuel in it and do you carry more bottles on longer trips?

    • @KevinOutdoors
      @KevinOutdoors 4 дня назад

      My Primus stove takes naphtha, also known as white gas or Coleman fuel. I get about a week out of a 1L bottle but I tend to do more real cooking with the Primus and so I tend to use it more than I would a canister stove for backpacking where I might just be rehydrating meals. On longer trips in the two week range I will carry an extra bottle of fuel. I always have extra. The bottles can easily be refilled.

    I wonder if the efficiency is due to the regulator rather then the heat exchanger?

    • @KevinOutdoors
      @KevinOutdoors 4 дня назад

      It would be the heat exchanger that is what it is designed to do. The regulator just maintains a more even burn from the start of the canister to the end.

    I kept a few of my son’s beer cans to play with. I made one but pushed it together too hard and the inner wall collapsed, so be warned! However, I managed to push it apart without cutting myself and repaired the bent puckered inner seam and tried again and blow me down it worked. I didn’t have any meths so I did a proof of concept burn in the grate under a trivet, burning isopropyl alcohol. A yellow flame and smelly but it worked. Unless I align my trivet top with the rim of the burner I don’t know how to quench the central well’s flame. Good fun, thank you. Hope I never actually need it

    • @KevinOutdoors
      @KevinOutdoors 4 дня назад

      Yes it is a good bit of fun and satisfying to know it can be done. These make great cheap camping stoves and many people prefer alcohol stoves over other types.

    Hi Kevin, I'm going to try this one for my next overnight! Just one question, is there a reason why you cook and mix the pasta with the soup instead of cooking and dehydrating the pasta separate? I'm planning to use gluten free pasta, so I prefer to cook it separate as it gets very starchy and thickens the water way too much. Also in your older recipes, you would bring the final weight to 150g, I'm noticing here you've changed to 125g. Were you finding 150g a bit too much? Thanks again for a great recipe Kevin!

    • @KevinOutdoors
      @KevinOutdoors 16 дней назад

      Great questions. Yes you can dehydrate the pasta separately there won't be any problems. Yes when I was younger 150g was just right as you get older I find 125-135g is good. Women eat less, my wife was around 125g when she was younger but is now at about 100g.

  • @billjaxin
    @billjaxin 17 дней назад

    Great video. What a lot of people don't realize about shooting a charging grizzly is the size of the target. Most of a bear's head is muscle and fur. The brain case is so narrow that if you shoot directly into either eye you'll miss the brain and just blind the bear in one eye. If you're an inch above the centerpoint between the eyes, you're too high. And it's moving. And you're in an adrenaline situation that gives you strength but sacrifices fine motor control. Indigenous hunters have shot grizzlies with 22 long. But those are to the side of the head, in the temple region where the braincase is a bigger target and the bone is thinner. From the front, imagine a deck of cards sitting on its long edge with the narrow edge facing you. Bigger than that of course, but that's the geometry.

    • @KevinOutdoors
      @KevinOutdoors 4 дня назад

      That is why I recommend bear spray instead of a firearm. With bear spray all you just spray the area in front of you and there isn't much chance of missing.

  • @billjaxin
    @billjaxin 17 дней назад

    Great video, wish I'd seen it earlier. Don't know how I missed it. I first started learning about grizzly behavior from Herrero's book about 30 yrs ago when doing solo forestry work in the British Columbia fjords. No bear spray or sat devices in those days. These days I spend some time in a similar area (Eldred Valley BC) with a small grizzly population. I put out trail cameras as a wildlife hobby, a solo activity (for me at least) which involves looking for wildlife areas but not wanting to meet them there. I'm 4 yrs late here, but if you're still here I'm hoping for some feedback on my precautions: - frequent check-ins by InReach with the folks at home. - a pattern of flagging that I use to indicate where I've left a road or trail. - bear spray is always carried in the same position so that I can pull it without fumbling. Occasional practice with expired cans and a couple of practice pulls when starting out, to make sure it's situated correctly. - bear banger easy to reach and hopefully hard to drop from a pocket. (lost it on my last trip though) - air horn for getting attention when I start out into an area, and when I'll be busy in one spot for a while. Followed by occasional shouts, banging on my steel water bottle, etc with lots of listening and awareness in between. - occasionally it's possible to take a look ahead with a drone, but not usually and never thoroughly. ( Can't let flying the drone distract you from what's going on otherwise.) - I carry a full backpack for the cameras etc and keep it free of smells that would interest a bear if I was down. The one bit of needless overkill is that I sleep in my vehicle. When I do tent, my tent smells like nylon and meals are done somewhere else.

    I followed your recipe exactly but as I dehydrated the sausage it seemed to get greasy. I laid it out on paper towel and changed the parchment paper in the middle of the drying process because there was so much grease. Is this normal? Will this meat still be shelf stable or should I try the meat part again?

    • @KevinOutdoors
      @KevinOutdoors 18 дней назад

      Good question. Sometimes a sausage will be OK but some sausage remains fatty. It will affect the storage life of the meal. I would do the meat again. I don't know how far you are into the process but I have even boiled the meat twice to remove the fat. Good luck.

    Hi Kevin! I found your channel and bought your book last year, but only finally got the dehydrator this year for this year’s backpacking adventures! 2 newbie questions (I don’t think I’ve seen it asked in the comments but apologies if it’s been raised before): do you not season the meat at all (when fresh), do you just add seasoning to the sauce? And secondly, is there a risk of overdehydrating the meat? It takes many hours and I was doing it overnight…

    • @KevinOutdoors
      @KevinOutdoors 21 день назад

      When you add seasoning is really up to you. For ground beef I generally add it later since my method of cooking is boiling. For chicken I tend to add it in the pressure cooker as it enhances the flavour of the meat. Q2 - No you really can't over-dehydrate. You are just removing water through evaporation and extra time in the dehydrator does no harm.

    After dispensing the spray, should you make sure to stay standing facing the bear, until it runs away? I could just see myself spraying and then running away in a panic lol. Or, I could see myself maintaining my position at first after successfully stopping the bear in its tracks...but then finding myself wondering if the bear has temporarily lost its ability to run away? Or, if it's just temporarily hanging back in order to recover & strike again. So just to clarify: Bear spray is expected to send the bear running, right (meaning I should wait for the bear to flee)? Not just stop its attack and be incapacitated, giving you the chance to flee (meaning I should do the opposite of 'waiting for the bear to flee' - not waiting to flee myself)? Basically, how do you know when the bear spray has officially "worked"... when the bear has completely disappeared? If the bear just stops, maybe backs up a bit, but is still technically present...Would it be a mistake to assume that's a sign the spray is interfering with the bear's ability to run away? Would turning and running away myself potentially be a mistake, by triggering the bear to run after me and/or turning my back on a bear who is about to continue their attack after they recover in a moment? Did you happen to find in your research any data on what the sprayed bears do after fleeing? Although I'm not sure exactly how reliable data could be gathered without scientists purposefully spraying bears and then following them for observation. 🤔 Questions that popped in my head like: How long is the bear affected? Can being sprayed interfere with their ability to flee, especially if they are struggling to breathe & see? Are there any reports of a bear being sprayed and running away, only to encounter the humans again after it recovered? (Whether in fresh pursuit of the person, or an accident.) Now I also got myself wondering of the psychological effects of being sprayed...How much do bears understand what's going on? Do they understand the humans just used a weapon on them, and one that we seem to possess on our person? That it wasn't an accident or a fluke. Do they "realize" this could happen again? In future encounters, do they show any recognition of the spray can & stance the human took (like, in the way animals might remember getting sprayed by a skunk: causing a new negative reaction to the sight of any animal perceived to be a skunk & definitely fleeing when it lifts its tail, way before it has to spray)? Does the experience of being sprayed by a human increase fear & avoidance of human encounters going forward? Could it ever actually increase aggression in some bears, either by enraging them, or by making them so hurt & threatened [in the moment] that they think their survival now depends on killing the human? Triggering "fight" instead of "flight." If you ever end up making another video on bear spray for some reason, I'd mention exactly what to do if a human is affected by it too. After the bear is gone and the humans are safe, what should they do to deal with symptoms? Should you try to wipe or wash out your eyes? Is it safe to use soapy water or wet wipes with cleaning agents in them to wash off spray that's on your skin? What kinds of reaction to the spray *aren't* normal and should be cause to seek medical attention immediately? (Is there a record of humans having any allergic reactions? Can humans be dangerously allergic to bear spray?) How long do symptoms usually take to pass? (Therefore, when should you be concerned about how long symptoms are persisting?) Is there a distance at which spraying the bear basically always results in getting sprayed yourself? (If I was on the ground with the bear already on top of me, then I would definitely be prepared to get a faceful of the spray...but, if I was still on my feet and still able to spray away from me, I might be taken off guard.)

    • @KevinOutdoors
      @KevinOutdoors 21 день назад

      If someone sprays a bear I would recommend moving away from that location. Bears will most likely move off but there has been several examples of bears pursuing people after the spray wears off.

    That water bath is a great trick, where do you find liquid water at -20C?

    • @KevinOutdoors
      @KevinOutdoors 26 дней назад

      Since this was just a demo I got it from my house. When I am winter camping I am collecting water from a hole in the ice and that water is just above freezing. Also I will boil water and put it in secure bottles in my sleeping bag overnight. By morning those bottles are still well above freezing. When winter camping I am always managing my water to ensure I have at least some available at all times.

      @@KevinOutdoors Takes a long time to melt snow, plenty time for that cold water to freeze. If this works for longer than 5 mins it has to be because some heat from the stove is being reflected down to the water bath to keep it from freezing. Still a neat trick though, thanks.

      @@andyr4611 I know in some situations, like arctic expeditions, people have to melt snow but that is pretty rare for me. Melting snow takes a long time and consumes a lot of fuel because snow is so bulky and you only get about 20% of the volume. Another trick is to put the fuel canister inside your jacket, it will warm up and light just fine. Once you have some warm water you can keep going all you want.

    Well Kevin. I finally got around to prepare and put together this recipe - your Spicy Chicken Loaded Bowl. And it certainly didn't disappoint. My wife is not always a fan of some of the dehydrated meals I make but this one - it was the exception. The only problem was half of it got eaten before i even got to dehydrate it . 🙂 It now - for sure - gets onto my list of the top 6 of your recipes that I'll be using on my trips. Thx, Peter

    I like your simple honest review. As you know, simple chemistry ensures that one gram of butane burned in air always produces the exact same energy and temperature. All these efficiency tests are so based on some magic. Turning up flame too high on any stove is wasteful to some degree. Wind usually has an effect. Heat exchanger fins always more efficient.

      Great comments, I have seen tests where turning the flame up too high wastes some fuel but I have not been able to replicate that. More playing with stoves is required. :)

      @@KevinOutdoors i have done tests on my brs3000. A moderate flame is as efficient as the best open burner stoves. But lower when opened all the way it’s obvious that the big roaring flame being wasted.

    Are we to believe bears senses are so poor that while we are walking, not stalking that we surprise bears? I find this hard to believe.

    • @KevinOutdoors
      @KevinOutdoors 28 дней назад

      It happens all the time. Bears have great senses but if the wind is in the wrong direction they won't smell you coming. If you aren't making noise you can easily surprise a bear in the right conditions. Have you ever surprised a deer or a rabbit or grouse? They have great senses too.

      @@KevinOutdoors long time hunter, i dont think i have ever surprised a rabbit or grouse. They know you’re there, they choose to hold cover until the last moment when you flush them out, you didnt surprise them. I think this line of thinking is all wrong. The bear knows you’re there, it’s either waiting in ambush or its thinking why doesn’t this stupid human know im here and give me some space.

      @@mmagscott There is a big difference between a hunter sitting quietly in a tree stand waiting for prey and a bear with its head down gorging itself on berries or ants when someone comes along and startles them. Many bears are startled this way and it is well known to sometimes trigger defensive attacks from the bears. I could care less if you agree, Kevin out.

    Sorry I think I may not be understanding correctly, if you’re using the Shepard’s pie flavour packet, do you just dehydrate the filling without any flavour, and once everything’s dehydrated, add the flavour pack to the mix?

    • @KevinOutdoors
      @KevinOutdoors 28 дней назад

      You could use a flavour packet either way. It may loose a little flavour if you add it to the mix first.

    Fun Canoe geekout stuff is too rare on RUclips. Even my favorite Canadian canoe youtubers don't talk a lot of gear geek speak. I love larger tandems for there capacity and shallow river abilities for solo. My solo boats draw more water and drag more frequently. I always have put my third seat in by replacing the stern thwart and install the seat as close to the center as I can. In a few cases even removed the yoke and added another thwart, a 60L Barrel width behind the bow seat. This would open the center for walking around while poling. Like Swift does there Combis. But, I see an advantage in loading your canoe with gear by having the stern seat further away and installing the seat where you did. I might consider trying this. A 2 piece 280cm double blade always in my boat for the long stretch's or sprints to camp. Great video!

    Hi Kevin, I just ordered a copy of your book. I plan on trying this recipe over the weekend and wondered if you had tried other spices for the chicken. Sometimes the flavor of chili powder takes over. I am thinking about looking for a spicy BBQ rub instead. Thoughts?

    • @KevinOutdoors
      @KevinOutdoors 29 дней назад

      Thanks for ordering the book! Oh man flavour the chicken however you like. I think a BBQ rub would be great. As I say in the video add what ever flavours to the pressure cooker you would like it will all impart flavor to the meat. I have done garlic and herbs, lemon and herbs, pepper and lemon, whatever works with chicken will work in the pressure cooker as if you did a long marinate.
